چکیده

To provide a context for the potential threat of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) sightings on airport operations, this paper compares characteristics UAS with two common threats: wildlife strikes and runway incursions. This study analyzed over 60,000 events in three-year period (September 2016 to August 2019), including 6,551 from Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Sightings Report database, 47,574 FAA Wildlife Strike 6,041 incursions Runway Safety database. The results suggest both similarities differences among threats. Both vary by time year day. farther occur at higher altitudes than occurring close airport. However, are reported strikes, distance is that general. severities similar. Pilots take evasive actions three percent sightings, severity A B also rare. general aviation (GA) most GA operations involved more Considering kind affected, primary airports, notably large medium hub whereas reliever airports. Generally, have had minimal impact despite their growing prevalence, which reflects overall success integrating new airspace user into national system.

Automated detection and enumeration of marine wildlife using unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) and thermal imagery

Estimating animal populations is critical for wildlife management. Aerial surveys are used for generating population estimates, but can be hampered by cost, logistical complexity, and human risk. Additionally, human counts of organisms in aerial imagery can be tedious and subjective. Automated approaches show promise, but can be constrained by long setup times and difficulty discriminating anim...

Review of Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS)

Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) is an emerging technology with a tremendous potential to revolutionize warfare and to enable new civilian applications. It is integral part of future urban civil and military applications. It technologically matures enough to be integrated into civil society. The importance of UAS in scientific applications has been thoroughly demonstrated in recent years (DoD, 2...

On-Board Visual Tracking with Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS)

This paper presents the development of a real time tracking algorithm that runs on a 1.2 GHz PC/104 computer onboard a small UAV. The algorithm uses zero mean normalized cross correlation to detect and locate an object in the image. A Kalman filter is used to make the tracking algorithm computationally efficient. Object position in an image frame is predicted using the motion model and a search...

Unmanned aircraft systems as a new source of disturbance for wildlife: A systematic review

The use of small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS; also known as "drones") for professional and personal-leisure use is increasing enormously. UAS operate at low altitudes (<500 m) and in any terrain, thus they are susceptible to interact with local fauna, generating a new type of anthropogenic disturbance that has not been systematically evaluated. To address this gap, we performed a review of t...

A Method for Rating the Severity of Runway Incursions

Risk is a function of the probability of an event and the severity of the consequences of that event. Any discussion of issues of risk in surface operations must include a valid and reliable measure of the severity of the outcome of runway incursions. This paper describes an automated method for rating the severity of the outcome of runway incursions. This model was developed using the same cri...
